Not Into Aerobic Exercises? Get the Same Results With WBV!
If hitting the gym every day for a 1-hour aerobic session isn’t exactly your cup of tea, you can forget about gym memberships and invest in a whole body vibration machine for home use instead.
As long as you combine your daily workouts with a diet that supports weight loss, you can achieve the same results by doing whole body vibration instead of aerobic exercises! That’s what a team of researchers from the Kyung Hee University, Yongin-si Republic of Korea, has found after investigating the effects of 9 months of whole body vibration, respectively aerobic exercise on body composition.
Improving body composition with whole body vibration exercises
Their study involved 33 women with an average body fat percentage of 34%, the purpose of the research being to determine whether exercising on a vibration machine can support weight loss and help one improve their body composition, bone mineral density, and bone mineral content.
The participants were randomly divided into three groups, one working as a control group and the other two doing either vibration machine exercises or conventional aerobic workouts. All groups have to stick to a similar diet, so the nutrient intake didn’t vary significantly between the three groups. The mentioned parameters (body composition, BMD, and BMC) were measured before and after 9 months of training.
Given that all three groups were dieting, the results revealed a significant decrease in the body fat percentage of all women, however the groups that practiced whole body vibration or aerobic exercises while dieting saw a greater reduction in fat mass than the women who relied only on dieting.
The total bone mineral content increased significantly in the group who performed whole body vibration in the first 6 months of training, but didn’t improve in the other two groups. As for bone mineral composition, the researchers found no changes in the WBV or aerobic group compared to the control group.
This study proved, once more, that whole body vibration exercises in combination with an adequate diet program can support fat loss and can help one improve their body composition just as efficiently as conventional aerobic exercise mixed with dieting. This study was done on obese middle-aged women and had no side effects.
The bone mineral density or mineral composition were not negatively affected by whole body vibration, so this form of training can be considered an effective replacement for aerobic exercise, for women looking to reduce their body fat percentage and improve body composition.
